Marilyn Maurek Obituary

Marilyn Joan Maurek, age 84 of Granger, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 23, 2024.  Marilyn was born September 19, 1939, in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Benjamin and Margaret (Phelan) Taghon.  She was a graduate of Mishawaka High School, class of 1957.  On October 14, 1960, Marilyn was united in marriage to Burnie Maurek at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in South Bend.  They celebrated 46 years of marriage and Burnie preceded her in death in 2006.

She is survived by her sister Ann Humphrey, her children Margaret (John) Meersma of Kalamazoo, Michigan, John (Emily) Maurek of Valparaiso, Indiana and Christopher (Angelo Perera) of Goshen, Indiana, along with grandchildren: Taylor, Andre, Max and Owen and great granddaughter, Amelia. Surviving as well are several nieces and nephews. Marilyn was preceded in death by her sisters Josephine Baert, Lauretta Zellmann, Marjorie Plonski and Benita Bickel.

A rosary will be held thirty minutes prior to Marilyn’s memorial visitation from 4-7 pm Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Wells and Cruz (formerly Goethals and Wells) Funeral Home in Mishawaka.  There will also be one hour of visitation prior to the 11:00 am Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 1331 N Main St, Elkhart, IN 46514.  Following Mass, Marilyn will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery in a private ceremony.

She was a devoted Catholic and an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church a member of the Rosary Society. Marilyn will also be remembered as a woman of remarkable humor. She was a talented storyteller, captivating those around her with her colorful tales. Her love for life extended beyond her faith community; for over 50 years, she was a member of the "POH" Pursuit of Happiness Society. She cherished her time spent with friends, meeting for Tuesday morning coffee, attending conventions, and traveling with her companions.

Primarily a homemaker, Marilyn found great joy in her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was deeply involved in her children and grandchildren's lives, always making time to support and nurture them. Alongside her family commitments, Marilyn dutifully assisted her husband Burnie with the Maurek's IGA grocery stores in Elkhart and South Bend.

Beyond her family and community involvements, Marilyn was an avid supporter of Notre Dame Women's Basketball, cheering passionately for her favorite team throughout her life.

She hosted countless reunions and gatherings throughout her life creating happiness, laughter and joy. Her legacy of love and devotion will forever endure in the hearts of those who knew her.
