John "Jack" Skevington Jr. Obituary

John Arthur “Jack” Skevington Jr., age 81 of Mishawaka, passed away at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center on October 24, 2023.  Jack was born May 12, 1942, in Fort Wayne, Indiana to the late John A. and Geraldine (Carr) Skevington Sr. He was a graduate of Fort Wayne Central Catholic High School and continued his education at Indiana University, Bloomington where he earned his bachelor’s degree.  While working with Xerox, Jack met Kathleen “Kay” Derksen at one of the offices he called upon for sales and service and they began dating. On May 25, 1968, Jack and Kay were married in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Granger. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Kay survives, along with their children Pete Skevington of Mishawaka, Amy (Ray) Byers of Granger, and Stacey (Brian) Bruen of Raleigh, North Carolina.  Surviving as well are his grandchildren Sam, Shawn, Heather and Samantha Byers and A.J. and Nate Bruen. Jack is also survived by his sister Jan (Dave) Liberman of Deerfield, Illinois and his sister-in-law Debbie Skevington of Slidell, Louisiana as well as numerous nieces and nephews. His brother, Dave Skevington preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held from 3-5pm Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Wells and Cruz Family Funeral Home (Formerly Goethals and Wells) in Mishawaka with the recitation of the Rosary beginning at 5pm.  The Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 am Monday, October 30, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka and interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.

Jack was employed as a financial consultant for over 30 years with Merrill Lynch and UBS. He worked hard for his clients and earned their trust, always looking out for their best interests.  Following his retirement, Jack became a man of many interests and enjoyed learning new hobbies to occupy his time.

Jack had a fondness for travel, especially to Mexico, Central America and Spain where he used his self-taught Spanish skills to immerse himself into different cultures.  Jack also loved spending time teaching English as a second language to local groups of men, and he learned as much from those he taught as he could.  He also had a heart for the orphaned children of these regions and generously supported them financially throughout the years.

Most of all, Jack was a man of faith and loved the Lord with all of his heart. He was a longtime and faithful parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Right To Life Michiana care of www.prolifemichiana.org.
