William E. Whitten, 84, of Mishawaka, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018, in Hospice House, South Bend.
Bill was born November 24, 1934 in Delight, Arkansas to the late Jack and Ruby (Barton) Whitten. He grew up in Arkansas and California and moved to this area at the age of 18. He served his country in the US Army from 1957 – 1959.
Bill, known by many as “Bill the Barber”, graduated from Barber School in Indianapolis. He owned and operated Bill’s Barber Shop on Sample Street in South Bend for many years until retiring at 80 years old. Bill barbered for a total of 60 years. He enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. Bill was an avid bowler and bowled on leagues for many years. He was faithful about attending his grandchildren’s activities.
On May 16, 1964, Bill married Darlene A. Beasecker in Mishawaka and she survives. He is also survived by his son, William “Bill” (Cami) Whitten of Mishawaka; four grandchildren, Cassandra (Kyle) Krumlauf, Becca Whitten, Will Whitten and Caylee Bennett; four great grandchildren, Riot Krumlauf, Ethan Whitten, Caroline Raney and Charlotte Krumlauf; and many nieces and nephews including a special niece, Vickie (Dan) Sterzik.
Bill was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Hamilton; and an infant brother.
Services will be held at 1:30 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2019, in Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 W. 3rd Street, Mishawaka, with Pastor Bob Vale officiating. Military Honors will be provided at the funeral home by VFW 360/American Legion 161 Burial Squad. Burial will follow in Ferrisville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1:30 pm Thursday in the funeral home.
