Dr. Robert V. “Bob” Watkins, age 92 of South Bend, passed away peacefully at the Center for Hospice Raclin House on April 20, 2026. Bob was born June 12, 1933 in Ohio. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master's degree from Ohio State University and later obtained his doctorate degree from Michigan State University. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a cargo pilot for several years prior to his honorable discharge. Bob met Judi and fell in love and celebrated over 50 years together until Judi’s passing in 2011. Following his military service, Bob and Judi made South Bend their home in 1962, and he began his career at Bendix and later Director of Purchasing at the University of Notre Dame. For more than 30 years, he was well respected and admired by both his colleagues and the University administration. He took pride in his work, including his involvement as President of Purchasing Society where he enjoyed organizing and hosting annual meetings.

Bob lived a full and active life, especially enjoying his time on campus at Notre Dame, often playing a game of pick up basketball on the courts during his lunch hour playing against many former Notre Dame stars. He was a devoted fan, and longtime season ticket holder for Notre Dame basketball, football, and hockey, and enjoyed time spent tailgating and attending games with his family. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a faithful member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he had attended since moving to the area. Bob also enjoyed the many friendships he built over the years, especially the time spent with his friends in their “Party Club” and his special friend Kathy Kuhn with whom he spent his last years.

Bob is survived by his children, Jeff of Mishawaka, Wendy of Lakeville, and Todd (Kim) of Mishawaka. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Leia (Scott) Kmitta and Patrick and Andrew Floran, and Lauren and Landyn Watkins, along with seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Judi, his and his brother, Bill. Bob always wore a smile and had a joke to share. He lived a full life and even drove regularly. He will be missed by us all.
