Larry J. DeBaets, age 77 of South Bend, passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025, with his family at his side. He was born on December 27, 1947, in Mishawaka, Indiana. Larry attended Mishawaka High School and later joined the United States Army Reserves, where he served his country with honor. He went on to work for TRANSPO for more than 41 years as both a mechanic and purchasing agent before retiring in 2010.

On September 6, 2003, Larry married Karen Lichnerowicz (Reitz) at the Shiojiri Gardens in Mishawaka. They recently celebrated 22 years together, years filled with laughter, shared travels and a deep friendship. Larry and Karen spent many winters in Kissimmee, Florida, where they made friends from across the United States, Holland, England and Canada. They enjoyed golfing together and “happy hours” by the pool. Golf was one of Larry’s greatest passions and he spent countless hours on the course. He also bowled in numerous leagues over the years and loved fishing in the St Joseph River with his son Ed. He was a loyal supporter of University of Michigan sports and rarely missed a game.

Larry was also a longtime member of American Legion Post 284 and Bowlers Country Club, where he built many friendships and volunteered his time to help care for the grounds. He was known for being handy and often made useful tools out of common items found around his house.

Larry is survived by his wife, Karen, his son Edward (Rhonda) DeBaets, and his stepdaughter Lisa Popielski. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Troy DeBaets, Trent DeBaets, Caden DeBaets, Nicholas Larkin, Alexis Popielski and Aaron “AJ” Popielski, and five great grandchildren, Carson, Asher, Lilja, Sophia and Damon. Surviving as well are his siblings, Theresa (Jerry) Chapman, Anna (Crill) Warner, Joe Raulerson (Traci), Chris (Michelle) DeBaets, and Paulette Butler. He was preceded in death by his father, Cyriel DeBaets, his mother, Leona Bass, his wife Joan and his siblings Kathy DeBaets, Cynthia Kedik-Batson, and Kirk Golden.
