Daniel Joseph Underwood Jr., age 52, of Indianapolis, passed away unexpectedly in South Bend, Indiana on March 20, 2026. Dan was born on May 22, 1973, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. On June 1, 1996, he married Judy Yvonne Hayes, beginning a life together marked by love, laughter, and commitment to one another. They recently celebrated over 29 years of marriage.

Dan was a man who appreciated the simple moments of everyday life, especially those spent with his family. Whether he was mowing the grass with his grandchildren, out fishing, or sitting down for a home-cooked meal, he enjoyed being together. He liked country-style cooking, had a good sense of humor, and carried himself in a way that put others at ease. Dan also enjoyed computer gaming and especially looked forward to playing Dungeons and Dragons with his best friend, Bill. He was a loyal fan of the Indianapolis Colts and followed them closely each season. His faith was an important part of his life, and he often listened to the messages of Pastors Robert Morris and Joel Osteen.

Dan was known for his strong work ethic and took pride in his work as a tile setter. He was a member of the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local #4 and was respected by the crew he worked with for many years. Through his work, he formed many meaningful friendships. Above all, Dan was kind, steady, and protective of his family. He approached life with quiet strength and, over the years, even came to accept Judy’s love of cats.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Underwood of Indianapolis; his daughters, Misty (Aaron) Wilkes of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Chrystie (Michael Allen) Wolchesky of Indianapolis, Indiana; and his parents, Daniel J. (Karen) Underwood Sr. and Tonja Mae (Mills) Shafer. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jarek (Alexis) Carter of San Antonio, Texas, Jillian Carter of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mikayla Allen, Kamrynn Wolchesky-Gully, and Micah Allen, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; his great-grandson, Tyrus Carter; and his siblings, Aaron Shafer of Jeffersonville, Indiana, Amanda Shafer of Hartland, Michigan, Camen Underwood of Noblesville, Indiana, and Josie Underwood of North Carolina and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his aunt, Robin Mills and his grandparents Joe and Joann Underwood.

Dan’s life was centered around his family, his work, and the everyday moments he shared with those closest to him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
